On March 25, the Evolved Edition of Alien: The Roleplaying Game will launch on Kickstarter. If Free League’s previous projects are any indication, it’ll likely be fully funded within the first few hours, so make sure to sign up for notifications on their Kickstarter page if you don’t want to risk missing a limited reward tier.

This announcement also comes with a closer look at the boxed products, and they are all quite the sight to behold. The cover art in particular for these new books is just astonishing, thanks to the talented artist Colm Geoghegan.

Do you see that map lying there hidden under all the other products? While it was always possible to play Alien RPG on maps with tokens, even digitally, the official maps just did not function terribly well for that purpose. They appeared as something a terminal screen might display rather than anything you’d seriously want to spend a lot of time moving miniatures around on. This, rather intentionally, nudged the game’s encounters further into their proper habitat of the imagination, where the Xenomorph is at its peak, but despite that design, space dungeons they remained, and it’s difficult to resist the urge to play them differently from Pathfinder. So if that’s what you prefer, the Evolved Edition will now officially support that more tactical, zoomed-in playstyle. Not only will there be new maps to enable this, but Free League will also be producing a set of their own miniatures.

Recognize anybody? These are characters from the new adventure, Rapture Protocol, that will be coming soon with the new edition. Free League describes this cinematic scenario as a return to roots, “featuring the crew of a small star freighter on a resupply run to the remote industrial colony, soon embroiled in a deadly conflict.”

The new, sample page from the Core Rulebook also looks much better, with a redesigned layout that looks much easier to read, complete with helpful flow charts.

And of course, if you haven’t already, make sure to catch up on Alien: Romulus before the new edition comes out, since the core rulebook will have been updated with all the latest from the movie including “new iconic weapons, items, ships, and locations.”

Announced VTT support includes Alchemy, Foundry, Roll20and Demiplane. Pay close attention to the Kickstarter campaign for possible deals.

Here is the full list of updates for the Evolved Edition:

  • A bold new look and feel to the Core Rulebook, with all new page layouts by Johan Nohr (of MÖRK BORG fame), new interior maps and artwork, and a stunning new core book cover by renowned artist Colm Geoghegan (Creepy Duck Design);
  • Revised and expanded core rules for talents, stress and panic, and stealth;
  • Revised combat rules for armor, ammo, grenades, stuns, skirmishes, and spaceships;
